Deryc Rees: 1991 World Championships - the Long Jump

I'm a fan of many sports and have many memories which send a shiver down my spine.

One such unforgettable moment was when the world long jump record set by Bob Beamon's 1968 leap of 8.90m was finally beaten. It had stood for 23 yrs until the 1991 world athletics championships in Tokyo.

Step forward American Mike Powell who was doing battle with sprinting legend and compatriot Carl Lewis amongst others.

Lewis made the best six-jump series in history but up stepped Powell with a monster jump of 8.95m(a record which itself still stands and may soon eclipse the 23yrs Beamon held the world record, Jesse Owens held the record for 25yrs from 1935-1960)..

I will never forget the BBC commentary when they saw the distance he leapt, then that the wind speed was legal...there was a pause until the distance was posted and there was pandemonium when Powell and then the crowd realised what has just happened...makes the hairs on my neck stand up just thinking about it and I can watch it over and over..
